The new found link between drugs and terrorism may be used to justify the escalation of the war on drugs as a proxy in the war against terrorism. This booklet examines the implications for the wars in Afghanistan and Colombia, two major producers of opium poppy and coca. Importantly, the analysis stresses that any future rehabilitation of Afghanistan must take into account the fact that opium poppy cultivation constitutes the backbone of the local survival economy.
