Omschrijving

Both ENDS is looking for an advocacy officer focusing on unraveling and addressing international financial flows.

Do you have a passion for a sustainable and fair world? And are you eager to hold international financial actors accountable for upholding environmental and human rights? Then we would like to hear from you!

About the job

Both ENDS and the civil society partners we collaborate with in the Global South are witnessing a significant increase in ‘development’ projects which have negative impacts on the environment and local communities, women in particular. These projects are often related to infrastructure development (such as hydropower dams, ports, airports, etc), mining and fossil fuel exploration (terminals, pipelines etc), and other extractive industries. They generally do not benefit local populations interests and livelihoods, and frequently lead to lasting environmental destruction and social disintegration. They can cause or increase conflicts for land and lead to the displacement of communities without adequate compensation. All of these projects are supported by a complex set of, often oblique, financial investors who remain out of the spot-light and can therefore easily dodge their international obligations to due process, and international laws, rules and regulations.

Together with civil society partners - notably women’s rights groups, indigenous groups, NGOs and community-based organisations - Both ENDS works to unravel the financial flows behind these projects and support affected communities in holding financiers accountable for the role they play in the impact the projects cause. Currently Both ENDS is supporting ongoing cases in Brazil, Nigeria and Uganda.

What you will do

  • Support and collaborate with, local partner civil society organizations to jointly address the harmful impacts of specific development projects on communities, their livelihoods, (women’s) rights and the environment.

  • Conduct joint research on international financial flows, for example International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), and develop dossiers and case studies, in close collaboration with local civil society organizations with a focus on women’s rights.

  • Collaborate with local civil society organizations to strengthen their position in decision-making processes of financial institutions in favour of ecologically sustainable and socially just development. This includes capacity building and knowledge exchanges with Southern civil society organizations on financial flows, particularly international financial institutions, institutional investors and export credit agencies.

  • Engage with the financial actors as a liaison for the local partners in addressing case related work, such as working on official complaints through international or institution specific grievance mechanisms, conduct direct advocacy towards decision-makers and raising public awareness.

  • Participate in and coordinate international (NGO) networks to influence policy and decision-making regarding development projects of financial institutions.

  • Organise international events, linking civil society organisations with decision-makers.

  • In close collaboration with local partners, work with international campaign organisations to garner more attention for the local cases

Your profile

  • Demonstrable advocacy skills and experience with and understanding of analysing financial flows. You know how to translate this into policy recommendations and advocacy strategies to influence these flows and related policies underlying extractive projects.

  • Several years of demonstrable experience in working with civil society organizations in Africa/Latin America/Asia and familiarity with the reality and political context of countries which are relevant to Both ENDS’ activities.

  • Ability to maintain and deepen relationships with Southern civil society organizations, with the aim of identifying and implementing joint strategic agendas and case related work.

  • Academic level of work and thinking: you posses analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities and obstacles, recognize relevant information, make connections, and turn a problem into an opportunity.

  • Demonstrable track-record and affinity with advocacy and project-based work.
