New Courses 2013-2014

The study programme of CEDLA is divided into Bachelor’s and Master’s courses. Bachelor’s courses are given in Dutch, and Master’s courses in English. In addition to the Introductory course (Basiscursus), there are various other courses offered at the Bachelor level. These can be combined to lead to a minor in Latin American Studies. 

Most of the Master’s courses at CEDLA are seminars that are closely related to the on-going research of each of the CEDLA research staff members. It is also possible to take a 15-month Master of Arts in Latin American Studies at CEDLA, the CMP.

There are also other possibilities for study and research such as intensive seminars and guided literature courses (Lecturas Guiadas of Tutorials). Supervision is also given for internships and research training, fieldwork research in Latin America, and writing a thesis.

• BA 1. Basiscursus: Kennismaking met Latijns Amerika

  4 september – 4 december 2013
  woensdag 10.15 – 12.45 uur

  Deze multidisciplinaire cursus introduceert de studenten in het veld van de Latijns Amerikanistiek. De collegereeks is dan ook bedoeld voor studenten die nog geen colleges over Latijns Amerika hebben gevolgd. De colleges gaan voor-namelijk in op historische, culturele, sociale, economische en politieke ontwikkelingen op het continent en worden gegeven door verschillende docenten verbonden aan het CEDLA. Er wordt zowel gesproken over het platteland als over de stedelijke ontwikkeling. Naast colleges met een algemene inhoud zijn er ook enige specialistisch thema’s opgeno-men en worden aan het einde van de reeks enkele landen uitgelicht. De cursus kan eenvoudig worden gecombineerd met andere cursussen op het CEDLA die later in het programma worden aangeboden. Read more

• MA1. Environmental Challenges in Latin America: Impacts, Conflicts and Partnerships

  Natural resources play a central role in the new positioning of Latin America in the global economic system. The region holds large reserves of renewable and non-renewable resources and is a major supplier of energy, foodstuffs, environmental services, and non-food primary goods. However, Latin American countries have not been successful in managing their natural resources in a sustainable, productive and equitable way. Read more

• BA 2. Geschiedenis, Herinnering en Identiteit in Latijns-Amerika

  De geschiedenis van Latijns-Amerika is niet alleen belangrijk om te begrijpen hoe de regio zich sociaal en politiek heeft ontwikkeld; zij is ook een belangrijk bestanddeel van de vorming van verschillende sociale, politieke identiteiten. Alle bevolkingsgroepen die de regio kent presenteren een eigen geschiedenis — ‘echt’ of ‘verondersteld’. De betekenis van die geschiedenis wordt van generatie op generatie overgedragen. Dat leidde tot een bepaalde ‘herinnering’ aan gebeurtenissen in het verleden die in het heden betekenis krijgen. Read more

• MA2. Cultural Resources in Urban Research: Identity, Space & Gender

  Latin America is the New World, the continent of hope: a better life for the poor; a more egalitarian society. Since Latin America has urbanized at a high pace over the last decade — more than three quarters of the population lives in urban areas — scholars’ attention has also been directed towards the city. Looking at the urban way of life from a cultural resource perspective enables them to juxtapose urban traditions, rural traditions (of newly immigrated urban residents) and emerging global influences. Read more

• MA3. Globalisation, Regionalisation and Economic Development in Latin America

  Globalisation is a container term, including economic, political, social and cultural dimensions. In the course of time, driving forces, leading actors and nations, policies, and effects for stakeholders in the process have changed strongly. • MA5. Social movements and democracy: Social capital and civic engagement in Latin Americ

  Latin America is a continent where the political – lo politico – pervades every aspect of society. This has led social scientists to focus their attention over the last decades on social and political movements. As a consequence, there has been a tendency to underestimate the associational character of many social movements in which individual members build networks of solidarity and civic engagement. It also led to ignoring social organizations which do not directly aim at resource mobilization or political objectives. This course aims at understanding and analysing these two connected elements in Latin America.Read more

• BA 3. Politiek en protest in Latijns Amerika

  De ‘linkse golf’ in de Latijns Amerikaanse politiek van de laatste jaren houdt verband met zowel de neoliberalisering als de democratisering in de voorafgaande periode. Het beleid van een kleinere staat dat werd gepresenteerd als enige optie voor economische groei en armoedebestrijding maakte de beloftes meestal niet waar. Sinds de politieke regimes in de regio formeel democratisch zijn, worden kritiek en protesten (vaak) toegestaan maar burgers en sociale bewegingen hadden in eerste instantie weinig invloed op politieke partijen, besluitvormingsprocessen en overheidsbeleid. Read more

• MA4. The [Post]Colonial Heritage of Spanish American Culture

  In Latin America, colonization left its marks on the present. As in other colonized areas of the world, there were colonizers and colonized. However, compared to many Asian and African regions, colonization had been early and prolonged — more or less three centuries; 1520-1820. Political decolonization occurred even before the colonization in other areas of the world had been truly established. If it has been marked so thoroughly by colonization and at the same time experienced some “emancipation” quite early, what features can we recognize as Latin America’s colonial heritage, penetrating into the post-colonial present? Read more

• BA 4. De Identiteit van de Stad

  Latijns Amerika is de Nieuwe Wereld, het continent van de hoop. Mensen ijveren voor verandering voor de armen, strijden voor een meer egalitaire samenleving. Vroeger werden die activiteiten vooral op het platteland ondernomen, bij de boeren en de Indianen. Tegenwoordig lijkt vooral de stad een broeinest van verandering en verzet te zijn, een locatie van alternatieve identiteitsconstructies, een onderwerp in culturele productie. Dat is begrijpelijk want Latijns Amerika is de afgelopen decennia in hoog tempo verstedelijkt: ruim driekwart van de bevolking woont in stedelijke gebieden. Read more

• BA 5. Brazilië: Democratie, Burgerschap en Duurzame Ontwikkeling

  Als het op vier na grootste land ter wereld en de zesde economie speelt Brazilië een grote rol in economische en sociale processen in Latijns Amerika en is het een steeds prominentere speler in de internationale verhoudingen. De recente sociaal-politieke ontwikkeling van Brazilië staat in het teken van democratisering, sociale hervormingen en duurzaamheid. Het democratiseringsproces wordt echter beïnvloed door de erfenis van een lange periode van militair bewind (1964-1985) en van een nog langere geschiedenis van sociale ongelijkheid en uitsluiting. Read more

  Deze interuniversitaire cursus wordt georganiseerd door een aantal Nederlandse universiteiten en instituten. Het Cedla is een van de instituten die in de persoon van Prof. dr. Michiel Baud betrokken is bij de organisatie ervan. De cursus wordt gecoördineerd door de afdeling Caraïbisch Kenniscentrum van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde te Leiden (KITLV). Read more
