Project description

The volunteer will be based in the neuro-psychiatry Day Unit at Whitchurch Hospital, socialising with clients and accompanying them on trips etc. This unit deals with people who have acquired brain injuries (from accidents etc.) and includes a wide range of people of all ages from 18 upwards. These patients are based in the community and attend the Neuro-psychiatry Unit one or two days a week. The Unit has a full range of pool, table tennis and other recreational facilities which clients are able to use between therapy sessions and to improve co-ordination and fitness too. The volunteer will also assist with group activities (crossword club, gardening, creative art and craft sessions etc.) The volunteer will be encouraged to develop a programme of activities with their own “special” client(s). In this way, each volunteer has a clear and separate role. We are keen to discover and utilise each volunteer’s particular interests, experience, cultural background and skills, as far as possible, so there will be some flexibility in the design of the volunteers’ timetables to accommodate this.

Accommodation

Although the individual volunteer placements are spread across the city of Cardiff, all the EVS volunteers share accommodation at the West Homes at Whitchurch Hospital which is located in a residential suburb of Cardiff, Wales’ capital city. This is staff accommodation. Each volunteer has his/her own room, with a shared TV lounge, kitchen, dining room, laundry room, toilets and showers. The accommodation is self-catering, though the volunteers also have access to the subsidised staff canteen on site. The accommodation is secure and separate from the ward areas and is served by a reception/front-desk facility which is staffed 24/7. During their free time, volunteers can come and go at any time of day and night. Normally, there is a full team of 11 EVS volunteers  sharing this accommodation.
