Research project Ghana
The focus of the research project will be on sustainable development in
general and on sustainable forest management in the Kumasi-region more
specifically. The main aim of the study is that the research results
will lead to practical recommendations, which in turn can be used by the
local stakeholders. In 2009 the research will be conducted for Tropenbos International.

The research team
The research team will consist of 6-8 students from different
backgrounds and disciplines, both from the Netherlands and from Ghana.
This multidisciplinary and intercultural team will work closely together
with the local communities and organisations (governmental,
non-governmental and businesses).

Who can apply?
Students from all universities (Master year) and Higher Education
Insitutes (4th year) in the Netherlands are invited to apply. Note that,
registration at the University of Amsterdam before the start of the
research project is required (this is free of charge). In general, all
disciplinary backgrounds can be useful in the projects. However some
disciplines will be more relevant than others like: agriculture,
biological sciences, natural resources management, social sciences,
economics/land economy, planning, psychology, socioeconomic, geography,
environmental management, agro forestry, fisheries sciences/management.

Don't hesitate and apply before January 16th 2009! Most funds have as a deadline March 1st. This way you hear in time if you can join us and start your funding activities.

Practical information
• Credits: The research project equals 21 credits. This means that students receive credits for the research, which can be marked as an
optional course, an internship or as part of a final research (for Higher Education institutes students only).
• Supervision: The UvA and the local university in Ghana (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology) will supervise the research team.
This means that the UvA supervisor will visit the team twice during the project abroad.
• Preparation seminar: Participants will get a series of preparation
workshops before their travels abroad. During these workshops various
topics will be discussed, such as: Practical travel information;
Interdisciplinarity; Intercultural communication; Research in a
development context etc.
