For our work on foreign trade and investments, Both ENDS is looking for a Trade and Investment Officer.

Together with environmental justice groups from the Global South, Both ENDS works towards a sustainable, fair and inclusive world, amongst others by challenging current trade and investment rules, regulations and relations in our global economy. We strengthen the voices of civil society to participate in spaces of policy making and analyse and provide information about policy and investments that have a direct impact on people, their livelihood and the environment. We engage in joint advocacy within regional and global networks and we stimulate dialogue between key actors.

Your work as a Trade and Investment Officer:

You will analyse the impacts of trade and investment agreements and related policy decisions by the European Union, the Netherlands and international institutions such as the WTO and UNCTAD, including on regional developments and especially the consequences of such agreements on human rights, gender justice, climate change, agroecology and just energy transition, among other. In your work, you will closely collaborate with civil society organisations worldwide to conduct and share these analyses to increase understanding towards lobby and advocacy;

You will support and collaborate with civil society organisations and activists in the Global South, Netherlands and Europe to achieve systemic change in national and global trade and investment policies, through joint strategy development, knowledge exchange and coordinated advocacy and campaigns;

You will assure that the voices of civil society and key actors, such as scientists and other experts, working on trade and investment from the Global South are meaningfully considered in policy processes in the EU, the Netherlands, and international institutions like the WTO and UNCTAD;

You will support in acquisition and fundraising, amongst others by co-developing program proposals for the European Union, the Dutch government and relevant multilateral organisations.

Your profile

  • Good understanding of and interest in trade and investment agreements, and their impacts on human rights, climate and women’s rights. Preferably at least one year working experience on these themes;

  • Capacity to bring ideas and people together, effectively identify opportunities and obstacles and to realise the objectives of our trade and investment work;

  • Highly developed people skills, confident, yet willing to continue developing professional skills;

  • Experience of working with civil society organisations and understanding of the diverse socio-political contexts in which we operate is an advantage;

  • Ability to think and work on an academic level, and through a critical and activist lens.

  • Affinity with lobbying and advocacy, able to translate analysis into policy proposals

  • Ability and willingness to communicate externally about your work

  • Capacity to express and present yourself and your work professionally and convincingly both verbally and in writing in English.

  • Minimally basic Dutch skills (B1) or willingness to learn. (Dutch is used within the office context and basic comprehension is advisable). Additional language skills (such as French, Spanish or Portuguese) are highly valued.

  • Team-player who is searching for cooperation and cross-fertilisation between disciplines, yet independent and determined;

  • Planning and organisational skills, including project management;

  • Willingness to actively participate in and contribute to a culture of mutual feedback within a horizontal organisation.

  • Willingness to travel abroad (e.g. 1-2 times a year)

Both ENDS offers

  • An internationally oriented, dynamic and informal working environment in Utrecht

  • A gross salary from € 3166,- to €4174,- based on full-time employment (38 hours), depending on education and experience

  • A 12-month contract for 32 hours per week, with the possibility of extension.

  • Excellent secondary terms of employment including: a premium-free pension, monthly mobile phone and work-from-home allowance, full covering of travel expenses
