THE CHALLENGES FACED BY LAND DEFENDERS IN LATIN AMERICA: CRIMINALIZATION, PERSECUTION AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN BOLIVIA AND COLOMBIA
According to human rights organizations, Latin America is the most violent region for the defenders of the Earth. I recent years, around 60% of murders of land/nature defenders have occurred in this region. Defenders face not only the violence of organized crime and paramilitary groups, but also the repression, stigmatization and criminalization of governments, the security forces, state entities and companies. This Dialogue will address these issues in Colombia and Bolivia, two Andean countries facing similar challenges in the way violence is expressed on land/nature defenders.
