Docu night and discussion: The Night Flowers

-

Shelter City Utrecht & Peace Brigades International invite you to the film screening of ‘The Night Flowers‘, an award-winning, warm and casually composed portrait of a group of queer young people in Mexico who are trying to feel at home in their conservative environment while preserving their often hard-won identities.

Following the screening, we will discuss more in-depth the greater context of LGBTIQ+ rights and freedom in Mexico. Raúl Caporal Montes, co-founder and director of the Refugio Casa Frida, will share his (professional) experiences on this issue with a specific focus on his field of work: LGBTIQ+ freedom. Raúl will be accompanied by Wil Pansters, Professor of Social and Political Anthropology of Latin America at Utrecht University.

About the film (85 min):
Uriel is a young choreographer who, together with his transgender friends, proclaim themselves – The Flowers of the Night. The strong friendship between them has generated a sense of belonging that unites them in a special way; in their sisterhood flourishes the manifesto of freedom and pride with which they live their youth and proclaim their identity, even though Uriel tries to abandon his trans identity with conversion therapies in a religious group in the town.
