To ensure academic independence, the University was established under its own Charter approved by the UN General Assembly, which authorized the University to grant degrees at the MA and doctoral levels. Although UPEACE is not subject to UN regulations and does not receive regular UN funding, it has strong links with the UN system.
UPEACE is governed by an independent Council. The academic quality of the UPEACE programmes is ensured by an International Academic Council of eminent scholars. The Rector and a multicultural academic and management staff oversee the day-to-day operations of the entire UPEACE system.
The headquarters of the UPEACE system is in Costa Rica, the country which initiated the process for the establishment of the University. UPEACE’s activities include: teaching, research, distance learning, and outreach. The UPEACE system also includes offices in Addis Ababa, Geneva, Manila and New York and partnership agreements with numerous other institutions worldwide. The Costa Rica campus serves as a laboratory for the UPEACE system in curriculum development and face-to-face-teaching programmes.
