We believe Knowledge Brokering is indispensable for creating a just world. In everything we do, we orchestrate the use of knowledge to ignite, spark and increase a positive impact. 

 

If you can’t wait to apply your skills and experience to support our work, then read on quickly! The Broker, a Netherlands-based knowledge brokering organisation for social impact and international development, is looking for two board members to join its supervisory board:

General board member | Treasurer 

 

The challenge

The Broker’s board consists of four members who are responsible for the governance of the organisation. A term on the Board lasts for 3 years, with a possible one-time extension. Currently, two of our Board members are approaching the end of their term. 

As a board member, you act as trustee of The Broker’s assets and must exercise due diligence and oversight to ensure that the organisation is well-managed and that its financial situation remains sound. You are asked to give solicited as well as unsolicited management advice to the Broker’s Executive Director. You play a crucial role in determining the Broker’s vision and mission to guide and set the pace for its current operations and future development. 

The Board consists of generalists who together form a multidisciplinary team.

Personal Attributes:

  • Commitment to the mission and values of The Broker.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills, with a focus on achieving results and driving organisational impact.
  • Able to draw on a relevant network in the field of international sustainable inclusive development or related domain is of added value.
  • Broad social interest and insight into social, human and political relationships.
  • Ability to balance between the need to give the Executive Director the necessary space and the need to provide constructive criticism.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Academic qualifications in the fields relevant to The Broker’s work are welcomed but not a necessity.
  • Demonstrable managerial qualities for small or medium-sized (non-profit) organisations desirable. 
  • Prior experience serving on a board or committee is desirable but not a necessity.
  • For the treasurer, interest in and experience with budgets, financial reporting and responsible financial management are highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic mindset, with the capacity to balance short-term priorities with long-term organisational sustainability.
  • Integrity and ethics, with a commitment to upholding the organisation's values and mission.

 

Who we are

The Broker is a knowledge brokering organisation based in the Netherlands. Founded in 2007, The Broker is a ‘Stichting’ (non-profit) focusing on bridging the gap between research, policy, and practice in the fields of international development, governance, and sustainability. The organisation serves as a platform for sharing knowledge, insights, and innovations to inform policy-making and contribute to positive social change. The Broker works with a network of experts, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and organisations from around the world to facilitate dialogue, exchange ideas, and promote evidence-based decision-making.

  • This position is not remunerated. Travel and other costs incurred in the discharge of work for The Broker is reimbursed.
