Are you a passionate researcher with a drive to contribute to change? Do you have experience working on technology’s impact on society, democracy, and/or human rights? If so, we are looking for you!

SOMO is currently looking for a researcher that will lead SOMO’s research on the tech sector.

About SOMO

SOMO investigates multinationals. Independent, factual, critical, and with a clear goal: a fair and sustainable world, in which public interests outweigh corporate interests. We conduct action-oriented research to expose the impact and unprecedented power of multinationals and promote fundamental changes in our economic system to stop and reverse the harms done by multinationals. Cooperating with hundreds of organisations around the world, we ensure that our information arrives where it has the most impact: communities, courtrooms, civil society organisations, media and politicians, and more.

Job Description and Purpose

You will lead SOMO’s research on Big Tech, focusing on the monopoly and rentier power of the tech sector. You will lead research projects that are developed jointly with partners. Besides, you will support other SOMO colleagues working on tech-related issues, as needed. You will act as a spokesperson in key forums (particularly the European Union) and towards the media on Big Tech issues.

Along with other SOMO staff working on Big Tech, you will build and maintain contacts, and ensure SOMO’s work is well integrated with the wider ecosystem of actors working on monopoly power of Big Tech.

Success in your role is defined as impactful, cutting-edge research, as well as strong external-facing engagement in key forums.

Key skills and experience

  • A post- graduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • At least five years’ experience working on technology’s impact on society, democracy, and/or human rights, preferably within a civil society or social justice context.
  • Good knowledge of technology sector issues, including within the European context.
  • Proven research skills, with a track record of publishing engaging, well-evidenced, content.
  • Good understanding of corporate actors and civil society actors in the Big Tech space.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and discussions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience representing an organisation to media, governmental actors and within civil society spaces.
  • Excellent writing skills in English; competency in Dutch and/or French is an asset.
  • A strong team player, able to work with a dynamic team of colleagues within and outside SOMO.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead research projects that are based on broad consultation with SOMO partners in the Big Tech ecosystem.
  • Play a key role in advancing strategic thinking on how to curb the power of Big Tech and create space for alternatives.
  • Write research reports, blog posts, position papers and social media content that is focused on achieving the goals of SOMO’s strategy.
  • Maintain close contacts and regular dialogue with partner organisations, and participate in dialogue forums.
  • Support advocacy on the Digital Markets Act and EU competition law issues, both via research and other outputs, as well as participation in relevant advocacy meetings as needed.
  • Build and maintain a network of media contacts on Big Tech issues.

  • An exciting and challenging position within a national and international network.
  • An informal and dynamic work environment with the opportunity to undertake new initiatives.
  • A one-year contract, with possibility of extension.
  • Monthly salary between € 3.621 and € 5.102 before taxes on a full-time basis (36 hours/week  –  0.9 fte), depending on relevant work experience.
