We help to strengthen resilience of vulnerable people exposed to hazards and crisis situations and we respond to disasters and conflicts to save lives and alleviate suffering. In the Netherlands with more than thirty thousand volunteers and internationally through technical assistance, supplies and money. Together we act before, during and after disasters to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people.


We do this without regards to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinion. Our seven principles guide our humanitarian work: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.


The International Assistance division is responsible for all Netherlands Red Cross international support for victims of disasters and conflicts and for vulnerable people exposed to hazards.


Strategic Designer

32-40 hours p/w, The Hague


In your role as a Strategic Designer, you will use service design & design thinking frameworks to build ethical & inclusive products aimed at optimizing, improving and informing humanitarian aid. The purpose of this position is to ensure our range of digital products addresses the needs of the people in need, humanitarian staff and volunteers, and that our digital products are easy to use and meet or exceed the expectations of their users.


Where are you going to work?

510 is the data initiative of the Netherlands Red Cross. Our vision is that smart use of data will help towards faster, higher quality and more (cost) effective humanitarian aid at a global level. The 510 initiative was established early 2016 and has grown since into a team of 60 core and project staff, students and volunteer data experts with diverse backgrounds. The team is developing data and digital solutions for humanitarian aid. Our main results are published on 510.global.


In this position you will work together with:

  • the Product Manager to define the product vision, mission and strategy;
  • the Product Designer to define the information architecture, flows, wireframes and high-fidelity designs
  • the Product Design Lead to strengthen 510’s strategic vision and the core value “We build products based on needs”

What are your core tasks going to be?

  1. Research and synthesis: Conduct both qualitative and quantitative research with affected people, staff, and volunteers of the National Societies, selecting suitable methods based on the specific context.

You can capture research findings into impactful insights and recommendations for the National Societies, the product team, and the broader 510 organization.


  1. Facilitation: Lead engaging processes and workshops with groups of varying sizes, planning activities, extracting insights, and involving participants.

You easily adapt to different situations, guiding participants toward valuable outcomes.


  1. Behavioural design: Discover the needs and mindsets of customers and employees, representing these through archetypes and jobs to be done.

You can model behaviors and correlate them with quantitative data to deliver business value.


  1. Prototyping: Explore innovative solutions to problems and evaluate design concepts critically. You create prototypes at various levels of fidelity and test them with users, using methods appropriate to the context.


  1. Design processes: Contribute to the design vision, mission and direction within 510, together with the Product Design lead.

  • You have a track record showing the capacity to use service design & design thinking frameworks to
    • Understand user needs and provide actionable insights to project- and development teams
    • improve (Humanitarian) products & processes, operations and decision-making.
  • Living in - or willing to move to - the Netherlands (at own expense and organisation).

Hard Skills and experience

  • At least 3+ years of professional experience Strategic Product/Human Centred /Technological Design
  • Demonstrable interest in humanitarian aid
  • Proven experience with user/human-centred research
  • Ability to observe and study people in their own environment (Ethnography)
  • Proven experience in organizing and reporting on usability and user-acceptance testing
  • Experience with organizing and assessing insights
  • Strong skills in Digital Product Creation tools & methods: Figma / Strategyzer / Miro
  • Excellent in communicating and finding support for ideas
  • A track record in thought leadership
  • Excellent command of English language (written and verbally)
  • Work experience in an international development & humanitarian setting is desired

The salary for this position falls within scale 11 as mentioned in the collective agreement, depending on experience, minimum of € 3.869,44 and a maximum of € 5.031,20 gross per month on the basis of full-time employment). A fixed-term contract for a year with the possibility to extend.

Next to your monthly salary you will have a 'personal budget’ at your disposal, of 18,9% of your monthly gross salary. You can use it to withdraw a holiday allowance, extra holidays or an end of year bonus. There are also various additional conditions such as a pension scheme, travel allowance, and good opportunities for personal development. You will also have a laptop and mobile phone at your disposal.

Our office is in the Hague, walking distance from the Laan van NOI station. Like everyone else, you work activity based, partly from home and partly from the office. We regularly meet colleagues on the work floor but also online via Teams to discuss cross functional topics and to stay connected to each other and our networks.
