Omschrijving

Stichting Human Rights Initiatives (HRI) is looking for a committed and proactive Project Officer for the project Thuis op ’t ACO (“At home at ACO”).

Are you looking for meaningful work in the heart of Amsterdam? Do you want to help create a safe and welcoming space for undocumented people? Would you like to join a small, dedicated team? Then we would love to hear from you!

About HRI

Human Rights Initiatives (HRI) is committed to protecting human rights in the broad field of migration in the Netherlands. HRI runs several programs and projects, including the Regiegroep Ongedocumenteerden Amsterdam (RgOA) and the Amsterdam Centrum voor Ongedocumenteerden (ACO). Other initiatives include the Study Fund for Undocumented Youth and Thuis op ’t ACO – the project you will lead as our new Project Officer. See for more information our website www.rgoa.nl and www.hri.org.

About Thuis op ’t ACO

The project takes place at ACO, the central location where undocumented people register for the municipal programme and can find information and support on shelter, legal and social assistance, and medical help. The ACO has consultation hours four days a week.

Thuis op ‘t ACO aims to create a space where undocumented people can take a break from the challenges of daily life – a place that feels like a living room: safe, warm, and welcoming.

As Project Officer, you ensure that visitors feel seen, heard, and cared for. From coordinating the brunch to engaging volunteers, you are the person who brings the space to life.

Your Role

As Project Officer, you will organize activities based on the interests and needs of ACO’s visitors. You will maintain a welcoming and supportive environment, coordinate with volunteers to prepare lunch twice a week, and handle practical daily tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, schedule, and support volunteers for the cooking programme
  • Manage project logistics and budgeting
  • Organize and oversee the daily brunch table, ensuring groceries are ordered and visitors are welcomed with food and care
  • Organize and supervise the lunch cooking programme
  • Ensure the ACO space is always safe, tidy, and well-stocked with essentials
  • Help maintain a calm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at home
  • Be open to the needs and preferences of our visitors and bring forward new ideas to the team

Your Profile

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Warm, approachable, and inclusive personality with a good sense for atmosphere and community
  • Passionate about human rights and committed to dignity and inclusion for all
  • Fluent in English; at least basic Dutch (other languages are an asset)
  • Creative and resourceful: able to bring ideas to life on a limited budget
  • Comfortable working in a diverse, intercultural environment
  • Experience with community work, event planning, or volunteer coordination is a plus
  • Available for 12 hours per week (two days per week)

What We Offer

  • A meaningful position in scale 7 (CAO Sociaal Werk) where you can make a difference in the lives of undocumented people in Amsterdam
  • A flexible and supportive working environment with space for your ideas and creativity
