AGROBIODIVERSITY OFFICER

Location The Hague/remote, 32-36 HOURS

Temporary position until December 31st 2022

The position will be hosted by the Sowing Diversity = Harvesting Security (SD=HS) team that is part of the Climate Resilient Communities Unit at Oxfam Novib.

Oxfam Novib’s Sowing Diversity=Harvesting Security, or seeds program (www.sdhsprogram.org), works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and indigenous peoples, improve food and nutrition security and build climate resilience through improved management and access to agrobiodiversity. The program works on crop diversity, participatory plant breeding, use of local food plants, improved functioning of markets and an enabling policy and institutional environment. SD=HS’s approach is closely related to the agroecological principles and has a strong focus on empowerment of smallholder farmers and indigenous peoples in biodiversity management. The program is implemented in eight countries and is also very active on global level.

For the coming six months the program is looking for an Agrobiodiversity Officer who will support our work in the eight countries with partners and rural communities, particularly in the work on participatory plant breeding, local food plants and nutrition, and farmer seed markets. We are looking for a colleague with a strong commitment to supporting smallholder farmers and indigenous peoples, who is enthusiastic to work on topics related to agrobiodiversity and agroecology and who can bring in technical expertise in one or more areas related to agrobiodiversity management, e.g., plant breeding, local food plants, nutrition, seed markets or participatory action research approaches (e.g., farmer field schools). The person will work together with the project lead, MEAL advisor and technical experts in the SD=HS team. Enthusiasm and flexibility are more important than a long work experience. This is a temporary position until the end of 2022, with possible extension till end of 2023.

Purpose of the function

The main purpose of the function is to support the global SD=HS team, Oxfam country offices and national partners to further implement and innovate the work on agrobiodiversity management in the eight countries where we currently work.

Main tasks of the function

We are open to candidates with different experience and skills in one of the subareas of agrobiodiversity management. The Agrobiodiversity officer will support in the implementation of the SD=HS program. Specific tasks include:

  • Ensure systematic review of progress reports, summarizing results, formulating feedback, identifying key bottlenecks in implementation, documenting successes and lessons learned.
  • Set-up and ensure the planning process for SD=HS, including coordination in the development and review of annual plans and formulation of innovation trajectories.
  • Execute the writing of consolidated annual reports and annual plans.
  • Ensures the development of presentations, publications, and other communication materials to specific audiences, enlarging the visibility of SD=HS.
  • Make an inventory of tools and methods with partner organizations to conduct a community diagnosis of the key resources and obstacles related to agrobiodiversity management, with specific attention for the position of women and youth.
  • Provide flexible support to another task that might emerge.

Key competencies

  • Fluent in English
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • At least Bachelor (HBO) or MSc degree in the field of agriculture, biology, nutrition, food markets or another topic relevant for the SD=HS program.
  • Knowledge and technical skills on topics related to agrobiodiversity management.
  • Experience with participatory action research methods. Knowledge of the farmer field school method is a pre.
  • Some knowledge about gender justice approaches and tools.
  • Skills and experience in developing methodological guides, tools, and training materials.
  • Flexibility and ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and deadlines. Willingness to occasionally work on irregular hours if needed.
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s overall goals and values, including a strong commitment to gender, diversity, inclusion, capacity building and rights-based approaches.

  • Oxfam Novib is committed to providing you with a competitive, fair, and comprehensive pay and benefits package that is justifiable to our donors. The salary range for this position is equivalent to a Specialist Projects C (scale 8) with a salary range between € 2.686,- and € 4.132,-depending on years relevant work experience, and based on 36 hours a week.
