Through the programme human rights defenders are put at the centre, in the position they deserve given the fundamental role they play in the protection of human rights and the construction of fair and peaceful societies. They often risk their lives to stand up for what they believe in, holding states to account and pushing for human rights to be respected, protected and fulfilled.
During this event we will look back to the Shelter City programme and the human rights defenders who came to Utrecht. Also, we will screen a mini documentary about Caroline, a Kenyan LGBTQI+ activist who is leading an intersectional feminist movement that will enable womxn’s participation in decision-making and in social and economic engagement. Afterwards, you are able to ask Caroline all your questions in the following Q&A.
• Opening speech of co-mayor Linda Voortman
• Short documentary: guests of Shelter City Utrecht
• Interview with LGBTQI activist Caroline who will tell more about her human rights work in Kenya.
• Short documentary about Kenyan human rights defender Caroline
The event is offered to you for free. However, we would like to ask you for a small donation
. With your contribution we can continue to generate networks of solidarity that strengthen voices and protect human rights defenders worldwide.
Shelter City is initiated by Justice and Peace. In Utrecht it is implemented by Peace Brigades International and the Municipality of Utrecht. Partner organisations in Utrecht are Human Rights Utrecht, Utrecht University, SIM – Netherlands Institute for Human Rights & UAF
