Journalistiek voor een eerlijke en duurzame wereld

When: 10 October 2019

Time: 10:00 – 16:30, with drinks afterwards

Where: Oxfam Novib

What: Young activists from around the world will share their stories and lead reflective sessions on the role of (I)NGOs and development cooperation in general to work together with youth and their organizations.

Why: Youth activists and youth organizations often use different strategies then traditional civil society organizations do; as activists, as (social media) influencers, as artists as entrepreneurs, as disrupters, or as peacebuilders. Their new ways of working, passion and drive for innovation makes them an unrivalled force for social change.

Despite their strength in numbers and new ways of working, young people face difficulty to make their voice heard. Civic space is shrinking – all around the world. When space is taken away, young people can be among those that are affected first.

So, what is the role of NGO’s?
More and more NGOs and funding mechanisms recognize the power of youth – support them, work with them and seek to create change, also when civic space is limited.
But do NGOs and donors really understand what young people need? Can they support young voices to thrive? Or do good intentions translate into limiting innovation, energy and space?

How: Only one way to find out: from young activists themselves!
On Thursday October 10th, Oxfam Novib is organizing a learning event to bring together the Dutch development community be challenged by young activists with ideas for social change.
